Photography tips

How this image was taken

To capture this brown bear at a focal length of 400 mm, a shutter speed of 1/400 s was necessary, while the high ISO of 6400 compensated for the available light. The aperture of f/6.3 made it possible to precisely focus on the animal despite using a telephoto lens.

  • Use a sufficiently fast shutter speed to avoid motion blur at long focal lengths.
  • Select an open aperture to isolate the subject from the background through shallow depth of field.
  • Be prepared to use a higher ISO when shooting with telephoto lenses in darker areas to maintain a fast shutter speed.
